Notable Achievements of the Collaborative in Phase One
- The top ten institutions in Texas became partners in the Collaborative in 2003: Baylor College of Medicine, Rice University, Texas A&M University, University of Houston, University of Texas at Austin, University of Texas Health Science Centre at Houston, University of Texas Health Center at San Antonio, University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston and the University of Texas Medical Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas.
- On the UK side more than 30 institutions were involved, including Imperial College London, University of Cambridge, King's College London, University of Oxford, University College London, University of Edinburgh, University of Manchester and the University of Glasgow - all of these are in the top 100, with four in the top 10 of the world university rankings by the Times Higher Education Supplement, November 2007.
- Since March 2003 a total of 30 events have been organized by the Collaborative, including a series of partnering seminars in bio and nanotechnology, bringing together world renowned researchers including Nobel Laureates.
- More than 200 researchers from Texas were supported to visit the UK and a similar number from the UK have visited Texas.
- Almost 60 collaborations, involving more than 180 researchers, were established.
- Forty five manuscripts reporting the results of research, initiated by the Collaborative, have been prepared and 31 have already been published.
- Four patents have been filed based on the outcome of efforts fostered by the Collaborative
- Research grant applications to federal, national and other funding bodies totalling ~ US$40.0 million have been submitted and funding of ~US$9.0 million has been approved thus far representing a success rate of almost 25% - significantly higher than the average funding rate of 10 to 15%.
- A start-up company Endomagnetics Inc., exploiting the technology developed through the Collaborative has been established between University of Houston and University College London.
- A Quantum Grant of US$2.9MM, over 3 years, from the National Institutes of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering of the National Institutes of Health (USA) for a research project on ‘neuro-vascular regeneration’ has been awarded to Baylor College of Medicine, Rice University, King’s College London and the National Institute for Medical Research in London. One third of the funds are for the UK institutions. This inaugural Quantum Grant, the only one funded from more than 100 applications supports researchers in the development of innovative medical technologies. The proposal was facilitated through support from the Collaborative.
